Olivia Hernaïz’s work is deeply influenced by her civic and feminist engagement and structurally seeks to provoke reflection and debate.

The work that we present here, Art and my career is a game, potentially in an unlimited edition, produced in 2020 and intended for wide distribution. The starting point of the project is linked to the discovery that Hernaïz made of the board game Careers designed by James Cooke Browne in the 1950s. She was intrigued by the thinly veiled sexist character of the game. Her first appropriation of the concept was making a movie where she filmed her friends, dressed in dark costumes or black ties, busy playing. She then discovered that an even more sexist version of the game, Careers for Girls, had been invented in the 1980s. This is what made her determined to really embrace the concept by sending a confidential questionnaire to a representative sample of a few hundred women active in the art world in Belgium, France or the United Kingdom. These questions dealt with various subjects as different as financial stability, sexism, rivalries, solidarity, career opportunities and/or obstacles, relationship to motherhood, etc. A hundred completed questionnaires were returned to her, which enabled her to construct the archetypal profiles of 7 characters/actresses in the game: the art historian, the gallery owner, the teacher, the mediator, the museum director, the curator and the artist and to articulate, for each box and/or card, the situations with which these different characters are confronted in their professional careers. The questions and situations are thought out in such a way as to be able to bring about and provoke a reflection and/or a debate between the players and of course, it is often interesting that when rounds of the game are organized, men take on the role of one or other of these professionals in order to become aware, albeit in a fun way, of the difficulties that they face.
