Prints, an art of attitudes 
Selection of works from the collection of the Centre de la Gravure 

Experimentation with printing techniques, an array of formats and materials, a questioning of the use of multiples and serialisation, the use of print and its distribution to reach out to social classes and sustain political ideas whilst making the connection between art and daily life. Long gone is the time when black and white engravings where considered as the quintessence of printing in people’s mind.

A number of shows of contemporary art regularly attempt to decode and emphasise the merits of the specific links between art and music. Tributes to the world of music flourish in the history of modern art, either attempting to visualise sound or taking inspiration from the energetic rhythms created by composers from each generation. At the beginning of the 20th century, Arnold Schoenberg and Vassily Kandinsky both drew attention to the similarities that exist between painting and music. In making its choice Le Centre de la Gravure has decided to approach the subject by making use of the wide scope available to the world of prints, ranging from the figurative to the abstract via constructivism.

Solo exhibitions : 
Monograph exhibitions can be arranged, as the Centre de la Gravure possesses a wide selection of works of some artists, sometimes covering their whole career. The number of works on show can be adapted to the specific needs of the organiser.

  • Kenneth ALFRED, Fugitive visions (exhibited at the Centre de la Gravure from 22 January to 17 April 2005)
  • Gabriel BELGEONNE : around 130 prints : lithography, etchings, woodcuts.
  • Pol BURY : around 70 works : lithography, woodcut, silk screen, etching, deformations, kinetics, artist’s books. 
  • Kikie CRÊVECŒUR : around 200 lino and rubberstamp cuts (exhibited at the Centre de la Gravure from 20 January to 15 April 2007)
  • Roger DEWINT : around 130 prints of this artist specialising in sugar-lift aquatint, also a few lino cuts and silk screens. (exhibited at the Centre de la Gravure from 5 May 2001 to 5 August 2001).
  • Gustave MARCHOUL : around 560 engravings, essentially woodcuts but also etchings, lithography’s, dry point and artist’s books. 
  • Jacques RICHEZ : around 90 works in offset, posters, silk screen and cut-outs. 
  • Luc Van MALDEREN [Parade] 25 years of silk screen prints (exhibited at the Centre de la Gravure from 25 April to 26 July 1998)

The living dream 
around the theme of an architectural Utopia 

With 60 works by 12 artists from the Communauté française de Belgique on display. The exhibition was designed and curated by the Centre de la Gravure on behalf of the C.G.R.I. - Commissariat Général aux Relations Internationales.

Body to Body 
88 engravings on the theme of the body

A thematic exhibition of always an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists. Whether venerated or treated irreverently, the body, in its many guises, is a key preoccupation for contemporary artists.
Side by side with international figures, the exhibition also has works on show by less well known engravers. For the Centre de la Gravure et de l'Image imprimée this is an important part of our mission: remaining faithful to the spirit of the collection and fulfilling our purpose as a museum which looks to the future as well as the past, which includes supporting young artists.

Relief Engraving 
This selection of around 60 engravings from the collection is an educational exhibition which aims to broaden understanding of engraving and the printed image.

It was during the late 14th century, when the world was in a state of flux, that wood engraving first appeared in Western civilisations, in response to a new demand for mass-produced images and text. This technique is the oldest form of relief engraving and its proper title is woodcut engraving. Since 1945 a huge variety of additional materials have come onto the market – plywood, linoleum, gerflex, PVC, plaster and size – which have considerably expanded the notion of relief engraving. Working with these materials is similar to working with wood, and the same tools are used: gouges, knives, and burins.

Etching and Related Techniques 
A selection of around 60 prints shows how many artists use the technique of etching to enrich their pictorial language, and thereby bring recognition to engraving as an art form.

Etching is a type of intaglio technique. Intaglio means that the artist makes grooves or impressions in a metal plate (copper or zinc) which is inked before printing. When the plate is wiped clean, the engraved areas remain impregnated with ink. This matrix can then be printed onto a sheet of dampened paper, using a press. There are various ways of making impressions in the plate: tools such as the burin or drypoint can be used, or alternatively acid, which eats into the metal surface. All of these methods can be used to produce etchings; some beautiful examples of related techniques such as soft-ground etching, aquatint and lift-ground etching (also called sugar-lift aquatint) are displayed here too.

Silkscreen Printing 
More than any other engraving technique, silkscreen follows the movements of other plastic artforms. This exhibition is made up of around 60 pieces, and is divided into three sections: geometric and lyrical abstraction, representations of borrowed subjects (including photographic transfer) and narrative graphic art.
